Indianapolis Colts S Bob Sanders still isn't certain if he will play Sunday.
But the 2007 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year said he feels more optimistic that he may play this week than he has thus far this season. Sanders, who spent the preseason and training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, has yet to play this season because of a knee injury.
"I feel better than I have felt in a long time," Sanders said Wednesday as the AFC South-leading Colts (6-0) prepared to visit the St. Louis Rams (0-5) at Edward Jones Stadium in St. Louis, Mo., Sunday.
"Hopefully, I'll be able to get in there and get some plays this week."
Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said Wednesday if Sanders does play, it likely will be in a comparatively limited role. He also said Sanders wouldn't necessarily have to practice all three days this week to play Sunday.
"The prudent thing would not be to go out and pound him every single day,” Caldwell said.
Sanders, a Pro Bowl selection in 2005 and 2007, said he doesn't yet know how much he would play if he is available against the Rams.
"We haven't even made that decision," he said. "We're looking forward to that if it happens. If it doesn't, we'll wait and see."
Sanders said while he very much wants to play, a measured approach is still the correct one.
"We have to be a little smart about the decisions we make right now," Sanders said. "When it's time, I'll be ready."
Should he play, Sanders said the first objective is "just getting my feet underneath me."
"I haven't been out there in a long time," Sanders said. "I'm used to running around and making a lot of plays. I just have to make sure I'm where I need to be, getting my fits, geting my reads -- communication -- everything. It takes a lot to be back there and play safety. I have to make sure I'm ready."
Also on Wednesday, CB Marlin Jackson said he expects to miss at least two more games with a knee injury that kept him out the final game before the bye. Jackson also said the knee that has kept him out is a strained ACL in his left knee -- and not an injury to his right knee. He missed the last half of last season with a torn right ACL.
Jackson played the first four games this season at nickel corner.
"Everybody thought it was my repaired knee that I hurt," Jackson said, "but it wasn't. It was my other knee. It's good. In the beginning it was nervous, because they were saying maybe they thought it was torn, but it's not torn. But it wasn't torn. I just strained it, so it's something I have to rest and rehab for these next 3-to-4 weeks."
Also on Wednesday, Caldwell said third-year veteran Dan Muir will start at defensive tackle alongside Antonio Johnson. The Colts last week released DT Ed Johnson, who started the last four weeks.
