I found this over on Facebook and wanted to share it with you as it sounds as though this is an interesting new group that is forming.
Stop by Touche on Friday night - May 8th at 10PM for the launch party and fundraiser for the Taqaseem Chicago Association hosted by Mr. Chicago Leather 2009 Ammar Housamo.
Here's some information from their Facebook Page:
Taqaseem (Taka’seem) is a group dedicated to bringing together the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) LGBTQ communities of the greater Chicagoland area. It is intended for Middle Easterners and North Africans who struggle with their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender identity and culture and to educate the LGBTQ community at large on the unique issues of MENA LGBTQs. Taqaseem is not religiously or politically affiliated and welcomes anyone from MENA to join.
Taqaseem is a generally known as a form of Middle Eastern music that relies on improvisation within set rules. Similar to the music, LGBTQs from the Middle East negotiate their sexuality within the set and rigid rules of our culture and society. We improvise; we harmonize; each with his or her unique identity. Sometimes we even sing out of tune. Yet we are all segments of the Middle East and together we form one large piece, solid and united.
