Last weekend I jumped in the car and headed off on a road trip - to Des Moines. Des Moines may not seem like road trip material but I was meeting up with some friends who were driving 12 hours from Denver. So why did we choose the "Mecca of the Midwest?" I can tell you in a single word - Tupperware. Yep we trekked across countless states to go to a Tupperware party.
Right now I bet you have visions of your mother, sitting in the "good” living room, surrounded by her friends eating sandwiches and sipping tea while a Tupperware representative gives a polite demonstration of how Tupperware can change her life, don’t you? Well I can tell you that this Tupperware party was nothing like that, in fact it is most definitely not your Mother’s Tupperware party.
This Tupperware party was hosted by none other than the fabulous Dixie Longate of Dixie‘s Tupperware Party! Dixie has been selling Tupperware for 7 years, ever since her parole officer told her that she needed to get a job after being released from prison. Well, that and she needs to support her three children, Wynona, Dwayne and the baby, 3-year-old Absorbine, Jr.
Dixie is a baudy Southern gal that takes no hostages and won't take no for an answer. You may not think that you need the "Rectangular Cake Taker" item number 0787 but she showed us how it doubles as a cupcake carrier AND a Jell-O shooter carrier. Dixie wants you to be proud when you pack it up and take it with you to your next church supper…oh you don’t go to church? Well Dixie won’t hold that against you.
This gal knows how to sell Tupperware; the "Pick-a-deli Container" item number 0428 can be used to make lovely vodka infused watermelon chunks that you can conveniently pack in the kid's lunchbox - yummy snacks!! Don't forget those “16 oz Dripless Tumblers with Straw Seal,” perfect for that early morning martini to take with you while you drop the kids off at school. She's got a use for every item that she demonstrates.
A few years ago Dixie caught the eye of some Yankee Producers and they helped produce an Off-Broadway production of "Dixie's Tupperware Party" for an extended run. She even received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance. Dixie has been selling Tupperware via her "shows" and she has consistently been a top seller within the Tupperware organization.
Dixie has just started touring the country. She was in Tucson a few weeks ago then moved onto Des Moines, where she closed on the 19th, and then heads to Madison, WI till early November. After that she will be heading south, like the geese and snow birds. Her first stop next spring is right here in Chicago, so you had better mark your calendar and make sure you don't miss her.
But then again - Madison, WI is sure heck of a lot closer than Des Moines.....I see another road trip coming up real soon!!!!
