Since 1920, Seattle based Eddie Bauer has made its name by providing high quality recreational clothing to the outdoor enthusiast. However, in recent years they have fallen from the graces of the mountaineering community due to an offering of products targeted towards the general public rather than the dedicated climber. In an attempt to reenter the serious outdoor clothing market, Eddie Bauer, partnering with Whittaker Mountaineering, has created a new line called First Ascent™ complete with the backing of notable climbers Ed Viesturs, Peter Whittaker, and Dave Hahn. First Ascent™ is available online and at the Bellevue store and will be arriving at other Eddie Bauer stores in September.

Take a quick glance at the First Ascent™ catalogue and it’s no secret that Eddie Bauer is making a strong bid to break back into the hearts and wardrobes of serious climbers. In an effort to gain credibility and raise awareness of the brand, an expedition led by Ed Viesturs, Peter Whittaker, and Dave Hahn, and outfitted completely with First Ascent™ clothing reached the summit of Mt Everest in May of 2009. The expedition made regular dispatches on youtube and blog entries followed by readers at www.eddiebauer.com/FIRST-ASCENT. Previous to Everest, the First Ascent™ team had climbed Cotopaxi, Ecuador and Aconcagua, Argentina. The apparent idea behind these expeditions is to leave no doubt in the consumer’s mind as to the ruggedness and functionality of the First Ascent™ line. As to whether or not this has been accomplished will be demonstrated by sales this fall as First Ascent™ arrives at stores. There is some irony in that the First Ascent™ team has yet to make an actual “first ascent” although it's doubtful that this will be noted by the general public.

First Ascent™ includes a full array of climbing clothing for men and women from baselayers and insulation to outerwear and even a full body down climbing suit, although with a $999 price tag it’s doubtful many will make it past the display case. The clothing is not only functional, but appears sleek and trendy which will extend its appeal to the casual wearer. My predictions for popular sellers include the Rainier Storm™ Shell Jacket ($349), the Peak XV™ Down Jacket ($269), and the Igniter Jacket ($179). The line also includes a climbing pack, the Tahoma ($79-$249). Currently in development and not seen on website is the four season Katabatic Tent™ which will retail for around $600. While some might complain that this clothing is a bit too much on the pricey side, the old adage “you get what you pay for” may hold true for First Ascent™ although it may take some time for the brand to earn that reputation. For now the "complete satisfaction or your money back" guarantee promised on the website will have to do.
