Thunder: Would seem to be a natural fit in OKC

You know that old song/chant fans used to come together on when their team was putting the finishing touches on a blowout victory over your team …? The one that goes:

“Na, na, na, na … na, na, na, na … hey, hey, hey … good-bye.”

Yeah, that one.

You can start singing it to Thunder.

And, yes, that would be the Thunder, the Warriors’ muscular, blue oversized mascot. It looks like after 11 seasons roaming the sidelines and stands in Oakland, he’s done.

Warriors use this "Flying W" logo all the time

No more launching of the T-shirts way too fast into the lower bowl. No more jumping up and down in front of season-ticket holders during crunch time. No more exhortations for Chalupas when the Warriors are down 17.

There's no official word from the Warriors _ and, of course, there won't be (nor should there be) _ but Thunder's all but finished. At this point, the absolute best Thunder can hope for is a greatly diminished role, but even that is best-case scenario.

The NBA might not have a problem with one team having a mascot named Thunder and another team with the name of Thunder, but the Warriors aren’t wild about it.

Not to mention, the Warriors have been trying for years to bump off Thunder as the team’s primary logo and replace him with the “Flying W.” Put two and two together and the handwriting is on the wall.

Officially Applicant No. 1 for Thunder's old position.

♦ ♦ ♦ Now for the good news: The Warriors may need a new mascot. And we're taking it upon ourselves to help them out.

As Charles Grodin in "Midnight Run" might have said: "Time to get yourself a new mascot." So that's what we'll do.

To the left is Applicant No. 1 to be the new Warriors' mascot.

Technically, it wasn't submitted but it did catch my attention. It was done by Josh Frankel, and you can find him at at Garbagetimeallstars.com.

This one doesn't have a "name" yet, but he's _ or is it "its?" _ going to be tough to beat. We'll come up with a name for this thing, so don't forget to come up with a name for yours.

Don't just say that you couldn't stand Thunder, prove it by submitting a new replacement mascot for the Golden State Warriors.

You think you got something better? We'll be the judge of that.

We're serious. Please submit all Warriors mascot ideas to mattsteinmetz52@yahoo.com.
