KGO-TV's Larry Beil: Nice call

Since this story is on the periphery of the Warriors and NBA, it’s worth a mention here.

An on-line pat on the back to Larry Beil of  KGO-TV, formerly of ESPN. Apparently he was the only media-type who bothered to call the Warriors after it had been reported they had signed Maurice Evans to a contract.

It was first reported on a Southern California newspaper website that Evans had signed a three-year, $6.4 million deal with the Warriors. Several national and Bay Area media outlets followed up by repeating the report, making the transaction seem like a done deal.

According to Warriors executive director of public relations Raymond Ridder, every local television station and news and sports radio station except KGO-TV reported in some way on Evans and the Warriors.

But Ridder said he received only one call, from Beil, about whether the report was true. Ridder said he told Beil the sides were talking but that  NO contract had been signed.

A short time later, the Warriors matched a three-year contract offer to Kelenna Azubuike, and Evans signed with the Atlanta Hawks.

Nice work, Larry.
