This may not be the most timely item, but to me it’s still interesting.
And so is the boxscore linked to at the bottom: A classic.
Earlier this season, Suns forward Amare Stoudemire scored 49 points against the Indiana Pacers by going 17-for-21 from the field and 15-for-15 from the foul line.
49 points on 21 FGAs is pretty impressive. By the way, Stoudemire went 0-for-2 from beyond the arc that night.
So I asked Elias Sports Bureau to see if they could come up with the last time a player scored more points in a game with fewer field goal attempts.
Sure enough Elias came up big, like always.
Two guys have done it since 1980 … one guy you might expect but not the other:
Willie Burton, for Philly, had 53 points against Miami in December 1994. Burton went 12-for-19 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, and 24-for-28 from the foul line.
You can find that box score online.
Adrian Dantley, for Utah, had 50 points against Dallas in late October 1980. Dantley went 12-for-17 from the field and 26-for-29 from the foul line.
That box score, far as I can tell, doesn’t exist online.
So the Utah Jazz public relations department was nice enough to send me a PDF file of the box.
Great stuff … great names … Jim Spanarkel, Geoff Huston, Ben Poquette and plenty more. … Only 5,703 in the Salt Palace that night … Darrell Garretson and Mike Mathis working.
One last thing about that game. According to the Jazz public relations, it was also Ron Boone's 1,000th consecutive game as a professional (ABA/NBA).
