Stephen Jackson soon may be one of the Warriors’ cornerstones.
Heck, he might even be already.
But before anything becomes official, Jackson is putting the Warriors in an uncomfortable position.
Jackson said the other day to Henry Abbott at ESPN’s True Hoop that he’s confident he’ll have a contract extension by the season-opener.
This is not the first time Jackson has expressed optimism about getting an extension to the media. Truth be told, Jackson is talking when not if about an extension to teammates and staff.
The problem now is that even if the Warriors do give Jackson an extension _ which I think is a bad idea _ it’s going to be tough for the organization to look good doing it.
Now, the Warriors almost HAVE to give Jackson an extension.
Somebody in the Warriors’ organization _ likely president Robert Rowell, who acknowledges a close connection to Jackson (and vice versa) _ told Jackson he’d probably get an extension before November.
And Jackson did what anybody would do in that situation: He told people.
But what if the Warriors, or more specifically, Rowell, has a change of heart? There are few advantages to extending Jackson now, if any.
Would it really be possible to pull back on that extension? That wouldn’t be a very good way to start the year.
It almost seems as though the Warriors have boxed themselves into a corner with Jackson … signing him to an extension isn’t a great idea; but not signing him to one after you told him you would _ that’s an even a worse idea.
