Just got done burbling on about how the substitution of “Oleanna” for “Uncle Vanya” at the
Mark Taper Forumrepresents the downfall of civilization as we know it.
Well, following “Oleanna” which closes July 12, the Taper stage will feature…er…nothing. Or at least nothing until September.
The Taper had scheduled a production of Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy “The Lieutenant of Inishmore.” Now that production has been postponed for a year to the summer of 2010.
The reason, says Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie: yup, the economy.
"This is a decision that fits the economic times we're all going through,” Ritchie said in a statement. “We are acting prudently by postponing 'The Lieutenant of Inishmore' to a new fiscal year. This will allow us to ensure the quality production that this important play deserves without jeopardizing our budget.”
Subbing out a production for something smaller and more manageable is one thing. A blank stage is something else.
It's doubly a pity because this summer, we could have used a few more plays about foul-mouthed insane cat-fixated Irish soldiers. McDonagh's the author of "The Beauty Queen of Leenane," "The Cripple of Inishmaan" "The Lonesome West," and "The Pillowman," each play darker and more violent than the next. He won an Oscar for his short film, "Six Shooter" in 2004 and was nominated for his original script for the film "In Bruges" in 2008
But if anybody’s craving an immediate McDonagh fix, Theatre Tribe’s production of the playwright’s “A Skull in Connemara” has been extended through March 28 in North Hollywood.
