Clearly this is Joe DiPietro’s time to be ubiquitous.
Apparently you can’t swing a playbill in this town – or probably any other – without running into the bookwriter/lyricist of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”
“LPC” as it’s abbreviated ran for an insane 5,003 performances off Broadway from 1996 to 2008, grossing something like $200 million if its producers are to be believed. The musical revue about love, marriage, mating, in-laws and all things relationship has played in more than 500 cities including, yes, Malibu, California where a production by the Malibu Stage Repertory opens this weekend under the direction of Richard Johnson.
That’s at 29243 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Performances are Fri.-Sat. at 8 p.m., Sun. at 5 p.m. through Nov. 22. (310) 589-1998, www.brownpapertickets.com.
This is also the final weekend of DiPietro’s “(Unprintable) Men” wrapping up its American premiere at the Celebration Theatre. “Men” is a riff on contemporary gay relationships using Schnitzler’s “La Ronde” structure as its point of departure. Two characters meet, one of them goes and meets another character, then that man interacts with another character until it circles back to the first character.
Directed by Calvin Remsberg, this one’s got adult situations and male nudity. Final performances are 8 p.m. tonight through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at 7051 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood. (323) 957-1884, www.Celebrationtheatre.com.
I promised you ubiquitous. DiPietro’s second Broadway musical, “Memphis,” which played a stint at the La Jolla Playhouse before moving north (to Seattle) and then east., opened 10 days ago on Broadway. This one’s another book and lyrics. The music is by Bon Jovi musician David Bryan (“I Love You…’s music is by Jimmy Roberts).
DiPietro, bless his prolific pen, is also a regular supplier of Sunday crossword puzzles to the New York Times.
