The All-Time all St. Louis football team continues today with a look at the cornerback position.  One of the underrated greats to ever play the position headlines our list.  Here is a look at the cornerback position.

CORNERBACKS

First Team: Roger Wehrli

This 2007 Hall of Fame enshrinee was a 14 year player for the St. Louis Cardinals at cornerback.  He was such a shutdown cornerback that teams rarely threw in his direction which would later cost him some years before he would be elected into the Hall of Fame because his numbers weren't gaudy enough.  But anyone who saw Roger Wehrli play knew how great he was.  During his time in St. Louis, Wehrli was named to seven Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro three straight seasons.  His 40 interceptions, while good, is what held him out of the Hall of Fame because it was not a high number.  The problem was that he was so good that he didn't even get opportunities to pick the ball off because teams did not throw his way.  Wehrli was a first round pick out of Missouri in 1969 and was worth every penny Bill Bidwill ever payed him.

Aeneas Williams

To know how great Aeneas Williams was all you have to do is go back to the 2001 season.  The year before he arrived the Rams were a historically bad defense.  They prevented the Rams from going back to the Super Bowl in 2000.  During that offseason the Rams went out and got Williams and that season they went back to the Super Bowl.  Very rarely does a cornerback make that sort of impact but Aeneas Williams did.  He was a tremendous player before he arrived in St. Louis with the Arizona Cardinals but he continued his outstanding play before finishing his career after the 2004 season.  Williams was named to two Pro Bowls while a Ram, one as cornerback and one as safety.  I think the moment most will remember of Williams as a Ram, was in the NFC Divisional Game against Green Bay in 2002 when he returned two Brett Favre passes for touchdowns.

SECOND TEAM

Pat Fischer

A 17 year NFL player, Pat Fischer was a great cornerback for a long time in the league.  He played 7 seasons in St. Louis with the Cardinals before finishing the last 10 years of his career with the Washington Redskins.  Fischer was a very productive player for the Gridbirds with 29 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries during his time in St. Louis.  What is most astounding about Fischer is that he had 10 interceptions during the 1964 season. Not bad for a 17th round draft pick.  Fischer was named to two Pro Bowls while with the Cardinals.

Jimmy Hill

Hill came to St. Louis with the Cardinals from Chicago in 1960 and made an immediate impact.  He went to the Pro Bowl the first three seasons that the Cardinals played in Sportsman Park.  His career started late as a rookie at age 27 but he made the most of his career playing 10 seasons in the NFL.  Hill finished his career with 20 interceptions during a time when there was not a lot of throwing in the NFL.  Hill had one of the great nicknames in NFL history...the "Iron Claw".  How could someone with that nickname not be on the team.

Other players who should be mentioned....

Todd Lyght: A really solid football cornerback for the Rams.  Played in one Pro Bowl in 1999.  Just missed out on making the All-Time team.

Players who should be forgotten....

Jacoby Shephard: Still one of the All-Time mystifying picks by the Rams
