As quickly as his name popped up as a possible new owner for the St. Louis Rams it disappears just as quickly. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports this morning that sources close to Fred Smith, president, chairman and founder of FedEx say that he is not interested in buying the Rams.
A report on Friday, in the St. Louis Business Journal, said that Smith could buy the team either by himself or as a part of the Checketts group. That does not appear to be the case at this time. Some might consider this bad news for Rams fans that want to see the team kept in St. Louis, but I think this is neither a good thing or bad thing that Smith does not want to be involved. As I stated in my article on Saturday about Smith, he fits what you would want in an owner. He is a person who has the means and would put a winner on the field. He fits that criteria but so do Dave Checketts and Stan Kroenke. The news just means that it won't be Smith.
The more I think about the Rams situation the more I believe that Stan Kroenke is working very quietly behind the scenes to get the deal done. There are clearly whispers around the NFL that Kroenke is trying to get the cross-ownership rule waived for his purchase of the Rams. If he can make it happen then this would be a tremendous thing to happen to Rams fans and the city of St. Louis.
The news today from Memphis does not necessarily mean bad things for the Rams situation. Smith would have been a good fit but there may be some better fits hanging out there. Including one current minority owner of the Rams.
