All of the handheld games on display in Ubisoft’s booth were installments from their uber-popular Imagine line and other casual games aimed at young kids. All of the games are for DS. Here’s a quick round-up of everything I saw. Imagine: Detective Style Lab Jewelry Design has girls designing their own jewelry, which can then be purchased for real. One of the demoers in the Ubi booth was wearing some of the jewelry to show me just what the quality was like. I have to admit, I was pretty impressed. It’s not Tiffany, but it was definitely on par with a lot of the trinkets you might find in department stores. Fairyland Battle of Giants: Dragons
This one looks to add a bit more depth to the classic Imagine formula. Players take the role of an intelligent teen girl who investigates happenings around her school. The Ubisoft rep called it High School Musical meets CSI, and that sounds like a good way to describe it. The game lets players explore environments using a magnifying glass and features 40 different minigames that aid in the investigations.
Two forthcoming titles for girls are under Ubi’s new Style Lab line. Makeover and Jewelry Design are both games for the DS that look to tap into girls’ creativity. Makeover will feature DSi functionality in that girls will be able to take a picture of themselves and change their hair and makeup right on screen.
This game is designed for very young girls, between the ages of 3 and 6. There’s no text at all in this game and it even comes with a fatter stylus to help the youngsters whose motor skills may not be fully developed yet. The basic premise of the game is that you’re helping to bring music and beauty back to the land of the fairies.
Finally, Ubi’s lineup wasn’t all for girls. Battle of Giants was designed for boys ages 7 to 10 and is basically a very simple action RPG with dragons. The game features 48 levels across four worlds and customizable dragons. Ubi is looking at releasing a trading card game to coincide with the videogame as well.
