One of the highlights of Nintendo’s press conference was the announcement of a DS-exclusive installment of Kingdom Hearts.

If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, Kingdom Hearts is an action-RPG from Square-Enix, the makers of Final Fantasy, that’s populated with characters from the Disney universe.

The new game, entitled Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, looks gorgeous on the DS, but that’s to be expected from Square. The controls were intuitive and easy to understand.

The big addition here is the multiplayer mode, which is a first for the series. The game will support up to four players locally. From such a brief demo, it’s really difficult to get a sense of the plot, but the game promises to deliver the same caliber of twists and turns we’ve come to expect from the series. The game follows the story of Roxas who was first introduced in Kingdom Hearts II.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days is set to be released on September 29.
