Alpine skier Picabo Street, paralympic skier Sarah Will named to U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame

Alpine ski racer Picabo Street and paralympic skier Sarah Will were announced Wednesday as part of the 2009 Class of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Legendary skier Andrea Mead Lawrence was also inducted through the veteran category. Lawrence died earlier this year at age 76.

The rest of the Class of 2009 inductees are sprinter Michael Johnson, basketball player Teresa Edwards, track athlete Willye White, swimmer Mary T. Meagher, men's gymnastics coach Abie Grossfeld, special contributor Peter Ueberroth and the 1992 men's basketball team, commonly known as the "Dream Team."

Selecting from a list of nominees released in April, the voting was weighted among U.S. Olympians, select U.S. Olympic family, media and fans. More than 112,000 fan votes were cast at teamusa.org. Paralympic skier Greg Mannino was nominated, but not selected to the final Hall of Fame class.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2009 will be formally introduced and honored August 12 at an induction ceremony at McCormick Place in Chicago. A taped program of the induction ceremony, hosted by Dan Hicks and Summer Sanders, will air in a nationally-televised broadcast on NBC on September 5 at 2 p.m. EDT. Incidentally, Sanders, a past Olympian in swimming, is married to Erik Schlopy, a former Olympic alpine skier.
