UPDATE: On Tuesday, Killington changed its original plan to close for the weekdays of Nov. 9-13. The resort will now re-open for one day on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11. A decision will be made on Thursday regarding operations for the weekend of Nov. 14-15.
Killington Resort in Vermont started its 2009-10 season on Saturday by opening the K-1 Express Gondola and the North Ridge Triple chairlift. The ski area has one of the industry's most extensive snowmaking systems. The man-made snow capabilities were obviously crucial to the opening of 32 acres of terrain, because the resort has received only 6 inches of natural snowfall so far this season.
“The passion and commitment from our team has succeeded in utilizing all the tools available to them to provide our guests with this early-season opportunity,” said Chris Nyberg, Killington’s president and general manager.
Killington opens 7 trails
The area opened seven trails on its first day: Upper Great Northern, Middle Great Northern, Upper East Fall, Reason, Rime, Lower Bunny Buster and Lower Chute. Due to limited snow coverage at the base of the mountain, the resort encouraged visitors on the opening weekend to stay primarily around the North Ridge lift.
The area will be open on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. While the resort will not operate Monday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Nov. 13, it may re-open on Saturday Nov. 14. Early-season lift tickets are $49 for adults (ages 19-64), $44 for young adults (13-18) and seniors (65-69) and $39 for juniors (7-12) and super seniors (70+).
