According to MASN's Steve Melewski, the Orioles are still pursuing Domican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano, though they have to be considered long shots.
The switch-hitting SS Sano took part in drills at the Orioles facility in the Dominican and the O's were said to be very, very impressed and happy with everything they saw. Said Orioles Director of Player Development David Stockstill, “We were very, very impressed and happy with everything we saw.”
The O's are far from the only team looking to sign Sano, but before his value can be accurately assessed, MLB is determining whether or not Sano is, indeed, 16 years old.
His current paperwork alleges that the youth turned 16 last month, but MLB brass became suspicious when he left a workout at 5pm for a shave and listed his wife as an emergency contact.
Ok, maybe not. But it is important for the O's and the rest of major league baseball to await results of the investigation. If claims of his age are accurate, Sano could be the next Jose Reyes.
If he is as old as 19, then he is closer to reaching his maximum ability than previously thought. Also, dominating competitors much younger than one's self is only impressive in Disney movies.
Yeah, that's right Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez, I'm calling you out.
In yesterday's report, Melewski claims that the O's are willing to spend 1 to 1.5 million on Sano. They do not want to pay more for him than they have for recent 1st round picks Brian Matusz and Matt Hobgood. Hobgood recently signed for $2.4 million.
If this is the case, the O's wouldn't seem to have a real chance to sign Sano.
According to The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec, not all teams are awaiting the results of the MLB birth certificate investigation. While Orioles President of Baseball Ops Andy MacPhail waits for final word on the prospect's age, the Minesota Twins have allegedly offered him a $3 million bonus.
Will MacPhail change his mind if Sano does, in fact, turn out to be 16? If not, why would the Orioles expect the prospect to sign for half of what he is being offered in Minnesota?
Reports about Sano's workouts and negotiations surface daily, so perhaps we will have some closure on this subject soon. It wouldn't appear that fans of the Frederick Keys should hold their breath awaiting Sano's arrival.
