The Orioles website has reaffirmed a story first broken on Adam Jones' brother's myspace page. Late last week, Jonathan Jones wrote:
"happy 4 my lil bro Adam Jones; He just found out he won the Golden Glove 4 his Baseball Team, the Baltimore Orioles."
The elder Jones then returned to playing mob wars and farmville. Fans of Adam Jones and the Orioles speculated as to the reliability of the story.
Well, for those of you who don't think myspace is reliable (or relevant) enough, MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez published a story yesterday afternoon to substansiate the rumors.
Jones had 9 assists in center field, though his .981 fielding percentage was only good for 6th best in the league. Still, this is a nice development for Jones and the Orioles, whose players have trouble earning national recognition due to the team's lowly win totals.
Gonzalez also speculated that Nick Markakis is a contender for a Gold Glove in right field and rookies Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold, and Brad Bergesen each deserve consideration for the Rookie of the Year award, which is being announced next week.
Last year, Aubrey Huff earned the Silver Slugger as a designated hitter. Despite a slew of candidates in award contention, it appears likely that Jones is the only Oriole expected to receive league-wide accolades.
And we owe our advanced notice to Jonathan Jones and his myspace page.
