Former Orioles closer George Sherrill found himself in an unfamiliar place on Wednesday night in Philly. The game was on the line, but he was used to that. The bases were loaded, but he’s been there plenty of times. Just not in the 4th inning.
But that’s when he was called upon to help try to resuscitate the Dodgers’ season. The team was down 1-3 in the series and losing the game 2-5. Sherrill couldn’t finagle his way out of the inning unscathed. He hit Shane Victorino on a full count to walk in a run. But he struck out Chase Utley to keep the inning from getting out of hand.
Orlando Hudson came on to pinch hit for Sherrill in the fifth and launched a solo home run.
Victorino would later put Philly up 8-3 with a two run shot in the 6th, effectively putting the Dodgers out of reach.
Sherrill also gave up a critical home run in the opening game of the series. After playing baseball for 3 weeks after his former Orioles teammates hung up their cleats, Sherrill’s offseason has officially begun.
Meanwhile, former Dodger farmhand Josh Bell, acquired in the Sherrill trade, is making a push for a spot on the O’s 2010 roster. Bell had a great second half at AA Bowie, and he’s continued that success in the Arizona Fall League. Check out Roch Kubatko’s Fall updates on Bell here.
Sherrill has come back from a few slumps before, and he should have a role in LA next year as a late innings lefty. However, with Bell heating up in the minors, the Sherrill trade is starting to look like a winner for the Orioles.
