We're number nine! We're number nine!

August 17, 9:54 PM

Forbes.com recently compiled a list of the most and least loyal fans in Major League Baseball, ranking Baltimore as the ninth most loyal baseball town.  Forbes measured attendance dips and increases versus a team’s win annual win percentage.  The more closely a team’s home attendance numbers were tied to their record, the less loyal their fans.

Read the entire Forbes.com article here.

Northeast baseball fans may not be shocked to see the Mets, Phillies, and Yankees fans ranked amongst MLB’s least loyal legions, but Baltimore’s relatively high ranking is somewhat surprising.

If I may *ahem* examine the numbers a little more closely, it’s important to point out that the Forbes calculation gives Baltimore a swollen rating.  Attendance figures amongst hometown fans have dropped sharply during the decade long string of losing seasons.  The only reason Baltimore has rated well in this list is the annual onslaught of Red Sox and Yankees fans who flock to Camden Yards, spiking annual attendance numbers.

I hate to do this, but for once I’ve got to credit the Yanks and Sox fans.

Not that I enjoy being around such a slovenly, unwashed bunch.

Weekend Review

August belongs to Ravens training camp and Phelps mania here in Baltimore, but contrary to popular belief the Orioles still have about forty games to play.

The birds won an away series against Detroit this weekend, scoring 30 runs in three games to help overcome troubling pitching performances.  The Orioles took two out of three from Detroit.  You can read about Sunday’s 16 run performance, including a 6 RBI day for Melvin Mora, here.

The team is headed back to Baltimore where they’ll be looking to play the role of spoiler against Boston, New York, and Chicago.

The homestand starts Monday night at 7:05 when Jeremy Guthrie faces Boston’s Jon Lester.
