One hundred sixty pounds of space has just been cleared up on the Orioles 40-man roster.
On Monday, the Orioles made five roster moves in order to make way for the return of five injured pitchers. Read the full story here.
Not surprisingly, wiry shortstop/second baseman Brandon Fahey was amongst the players removed from the roster. Listed at 6’ 2” 160 (he may be weighed with his shoes on), Brandon Fahey is an anomaly in modern day baseball. A spindly 27-year-old who wouldn’t be the biggest kid on some little league teams, Fahey had his big moments. Hey, he was the AT&T Player of the game on July 4, 2008.
He also hit .226 for the year. In 2008, Fahey rode the express from AAA Norfolk to Baltimore. Starting the season with the major league club, Fahey was sent down in late April, recalled in June, sent back down in August, and recalled once more in September.
Fahey hit his first career home run off of Curt Shilling in May 2006. To date, he has two career home runs.
In an era sullied by the dark cloud of steroids, Brandon Fahey never resorted to enhancements to push his marginal baseball career over the Mendoza line. It’s safe to say this little 2B didn’t try steroids, not even once.
Of course, baseball is a funny sport. Baltimore may not have seen the last of Brandon Fahey. Fahey is free to return to Norfolk as a minor leaguer if he so chooses. He may get another chance. Or he may sneak into OPACY as a batboy. You just never know.
In any event, since becoming a pro player in 2002, Fahey has been an inspiration to tall, skinny people everywhere. At least, that’s what tall, skinny people tell me.
