Orioles rookie throws complete game shutout

September 16, 10:05 PM

O’s rookie Chris Waters pitched a nine inning shutout against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Tuesday night.  The performance was the first CG shutout by an Oriole this season.  Waters, who was called up in August, didn’t allow a batter past second base as the Orioles won the game 2-0.

Waters is the same rookie who shut out the LA Angels over eight innings in his major league debut on August 5.

That performance and Tuesday’s provided highlights during an otherwise abysmal two months of pitching for the O’s, but generally speaking Waters has been up and down.  The 27 year old has 3 wins, 3 losses, and 3 no decisions with an ERA around 5.00.  He will have to fight for a roster spot in the Spring.

Luke Scott hit a home run, his 23rd of the year, and Melvin Mora was ejected from the game for arguing strike three.  Otherwise, the game was a pitching duel between Waters and a half dozen Toronto pitchers.  The Toronto ‘pen was called into action early when starter Shaun Marcum was pulled in the third inning with an injury.

Despite the impressive complete game, I’m guessing Sports Center won’t lead off with the O’s vs. Jays matchup tonight.  Call it a hunch.

The Orioles carry their modest two-game winning streak into Wednesday’s game, when they will face the Jays in Toronto for game two of a four-game series.
