If you like wildlife, (particularly alligators) the best place to hike in Houston is Brazos Bend State Park. Located off Interstate 59 just pass the George Ranch is a 5,000 acre park teeming with Gators. Most of the hikes are on elevated dirt trails that take you past alligator ponds and lakes.
As the most prominent feature of Brazos Ben State park, the alligators can be as close as five feet away with no fence or barrier separating you from them. Because of this, be very aware of your surroundings and do not let small children run ahead. Most of the alligators are acclimated to people, but it is best to err on the side of caution.
Pets on leash are allowed but do not let them drink from the lake or enter the water under any circumstances. If it is a hot day, it may be best to leave the pets home. They can be tempted to jump into the water to cool off. There are, however, water stations located on the trails for both people and dogs.
The park is open 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the summer and 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the winter. Cost of admission is $4 per person age 13 and older. Get a trail map from headquarters to determine the best hike for you and your family or pick up a copy of “60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Houston,” for a list on hikes in the park.
