Fall hiking around Houston
Now that autumn is here, it's time to get back out on the trail and start hiking. October and on into the winter months are ideal months to hike in and around Houston because the humidity drops, the temperatures drop, the skies get bluer, and the wildlife more lively.
When planning that fall hike, remember to do the following:
- Start your hike early in the day if it is going to be a long hike since the days are shorter and you don't want to get caught out on the trail at night.
- Check all hunting schedules and check to see if hunting is allowed in the area you are hiking in.
- Prepare for a sudden weather change. It's not uncommon to start a hike with beautiful 70 degree weather and end it with rain and temperatures in the low 50's.
- Even though the weather is cooler, still make sure and bring plenty of water and sun screen.
- Always hike with a buddy and tell someone back home where you are going and when they should expect you back.
If you don't have a hiking partner and would like to hike with a group check out the Houston Happy Hikers, Bayou City Outdoors, the Lone Star Hiking Trail Club, and any neighborhood walking/hiking groups in your area. Most of these groups have at least one hike a month.
