Ice cream or custard for dessert? It is a delicious dilemma. I am a huge ice cream fan but when faced with making a choice between the two, frozen custard usually wins. Great ice cream shops are plentiful but a traditional custard shop is a true gem. Ice Cream ranks right up there as one of America's favorite desserts. Ice cream is made with a combination of milk products and sweeteners (sugar, corn syrup, honey or some other type of artificial sweetener). Air is blended into the mixture to prevent it from becoming frozen solid. Due to FDA regulations plain ice cream must have at least 10% milk fat. Ice cream with solids added must have at least a minimum of 8% milk fat. Custard differs from ice cream with the addition of eggs and a higher percentage of butterfat. It has a creamy, smooth texture and a rich flavor. It is typically softer than ice cream. The production time is slower than that of ice cream and less air is added to the mixture. Frozen custard is rarely sold on store shelves due to the labor intensive process required to produce it. Most frozen custards can be found only at custard shops where it is usually made on site.
A few of the many custard flavors at Adele's include: snicker bar, banana chocolate chip, New York cherry, and mocha chip. My favorite is the chocolate raspberry truffle. The creamy chocolate custard has thick chunks of chocolate, luscious raspberries and fudge sauce mixed throughout. The sundae is topped off with a generous dollop of whipped cream. Adele's is located in Excelsior and is very close in proximity to Lake Minnetonka. The high quality and consistently rich flavor of their custard draws people from all over the Twin Cities. While the inside of the building is small, the outdoor seating area is a great place to relax and enjoy your custard. There is a drive through as well. Weekend the flavors for Saturday June 6th are death by chocolate and coconut cream and for Sunday June 7th the flavors are chocolate raspberry truffle and key lime. I guess you know where to find me this Sunday!
