I recently came across a quote by Helen Keller that summed up my thoughts on adventure. According to Ms. Keller, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing...Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure." There's a strong connection between conquering physical challenges (aka: adventure hobbies and sports) and developing confidence and stamina needed to overcome life's challenges. Many parallels can be drawn between scaling a difficult peak, for instance, and most obstacles we face in life. In accomplishing something physical that you've never done before, you'll begin to imagine yourself able to do other things that may have at one time seemed impossible. Adventure offers fresh perspective and clarity of mind and suddenly what seemed like an unscalable mountain doesn't seem so insurmountable.
We can all learn a thing or two from Helen Keller. She will forever symbolize what it means to live boldly and daringly embrace the unknown. It inspires us to hear about people who have accomplished great feats or overcome tremendous hurdles, but why not be your own inspiration? Every individual must calculate his own acceptable level of risk. What's most important is not how extreme the adventure is, but that we're removing ourselves from what's comfortable and familiar and letting an extraordinary experience change us for every area of our lives.
