What a fabulous food week-and-a-half ahead - starting tomorrow!

Wednesday, July 8 (from 4:00 to 5:30), Rover's will be the site of the 1st Francophile Fruit Tart Contest. Competitors include restaurants Café Campagne and Brasserie Margaux, as well as bakeries such as Le Fournil, Parisian Star Desserts, Macrina, Boulangerie Nantaise. Participants will be judged on the following criteria: flavor, texture, craftsmanship, originality and presentation, with the jury paying special attention to the use of seasonal, local and sustainable products. $20 gains entry, and includes samplings of the tarts and some French wines. Call Rover's at 206-325-7442 for more information. (Photo from my Rover's brunch report.)

The tart contest is prelude to the annual Bastille Day celebration, which runs July 11-12, and includes the Bal des Pompiers, children's activities, music, and chef demonstrations. The action is at the Seattle Center, with more information at the Seattle Bastille website.

Also on July 12 is the Seattle Luxury Chocolate Salon at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center. Tickets are $20 ($25 at the door), and include workshops and tastings of chocolate. (Might I mention that one of the participants, Chocolopolis, will be hosting a week of special events starting July 12 to commemorate its first-year anniverary?) Yours truly will be part of the judging panel, taking on the tough task of choosing the best chocolatiers in a variety of categories. More information is at the Salon website, or in my write-up here.

And I'll be at the same location the following Wednesday, July 15, as part of the judging panel for Guest Chef on the Waterfront. $70 (note: no tickets at the door) gets you lots of bites and sips from the area's finest restaurants and wineries, as well as games and live jazz from the Jason Parker Quartet - all to benefit FareStart. Check here for my previous report, or go directly the GCOW event website.

Stomach still has some space in it? Get ready for the annual Bite of Seattle, coming July 17-19 at the Seattle Center. Full information on that extravaganza at the Bite website.
