Friends came to visit from Taiwan for a couple of days this week, and brought as a gift a box of suncakes (Tai Yang Bing). These flaky cakes (almost biscuits) have a subtle sweetness that make them a nice match with tea. There are various stories about how suncakes got their name; some say they resemble the sun—or more specifically the rising sun of the Japanese flag, while others attribute the name to the Sunbooth bakery which made them famous in Taichung, where they are now a popular souvenir. I’ll look for these when I go to Taiwan later this year, but more immediately I’ll scour the stores in Seattle for them as well.
