Kepi, Dino and Atom / Shawn Marshall

Vampires, fairies, Little Red Riding Hood and even C.J. Ramone materialized at the Javalounge in celebration of Halloween Saturday night.

The costumed crowd was treated to a surprise set by L-fi aka Chris from Teenage Harlets. However, a certain lady demon arrived just in time to catch the end of the Little Medusa's set.

The Little Medusas sound like 12-year-old girls when they're singing about monsters, but in a cute, non annoying way, like The Dollyrots meets the Groovie Ghoulies. Kepi Ghoulie backs the band on drums, but the stars of the show are Whitless (guitar) and DinoGirl (bass) who sing nearly straight through each song without pausing to breathe. They're like robotic zombies from outer space in pigtails.

Pets' fuzzy indie rock had killers and victims alike dancing in harmony to songs like "Be My Friend" (that guitarist Allison sings) and "Give You A Ride" (that bassist Derek sings).  With a drumming monkey rounding out the lineup, the band unleashed the aptly covered "Pet Sematary" on the crowd and everyone shouted along until the last distorted note cried out.

As it rained candy, glow sticks and balloons, Kepi brought Halloween to life with Ramones-influenced pop punk supernatural songs, "The Beast With Five Hands" and "(She's My) Vampire Girl."

Kepi is like the Energizer Bunny on crack. He must subsist off a diet of candy, coffee and onion rings from Willie's. On stage he's a comedian, moderate political commentator and one of the best frontman Sacramento has ever seen.

He lead the band (Dino on bass, Atom on drums) through new songs and Groovie Ghoulies' classics, all while challenging fans to a dance contest.

Forget the Tour de France, keeping up with Kepi is the true test of endurance. Nobody can rival Kepi's vivacity, but you can join him, dancing the Time Warp to a Chuck Berry cover with so much intensity that clocks actually wind back a whole hour.

And really, how can you beat that?
