I live in the same neighborhood as the Malkis, so I can say first-hand:
their backyard fence doesn't really go right up to the ocean like that.

In a world....

....where technology has overtaken the planet....

....and theme weddings have run wild....

....get ready for the EVENT....

....OF A LIFETIME.

[Imagine hard-driving electric guitar riff here.]

My down-the-block neighbor and favorite comic strip artist of all time David Malki! (yes, with exclamation point) is the wunder-mind behind the neo-Victorian mash-up comic WonderMark, and he recently blogposted these inspired items from his own wedding.  They certainly deserve to be immortalized in a wedding column or two, and hopefully they'll provide creative fuel for couples who long to make their wedding celebrations unique and memorable.

Dave and Nikki both worked in movie advertising when they got engaged, so the cinema-stylistic wedding enhancements were especially apropos.  Check out their video save-the-date announcement, in the style of one of those rogue spy/cop/vengeance-driven dude thrillers:

'Getting Married' Trailer from David Malki ! on Vimeo.

Their movie-poster announcement (above) is certainly collectible, but I most enjoyed the exciting conclusion to this action-adventure wedding theme--the ULTIMATE action-adventure cake!  [cue more hard-driving electric guitar riffs as you admire this]:

This is yet another of the incredible creations by Mike's Amazing Cakes in Redmond, WA;  I don't know how Mike's cakes taste, but not sure it matters--they took Dave's clever design concept and made it real with phenomenal skill.  Crashing a plane into a wedding cake is a hard thing to do, especially with a formally-clad bride and groom struggling to stay atop the precariously-angled crowning layer!   After what I'm sure was a narrow escape from their pursuers, I hope it was satisfying for Dave and Nikki to cut their tiny arch-nemeses in half with a pretty cake knife--a fitting and tasty end to their sugary evil.

The upshot of all this fun-ness?  Many couples say they want a memorable wedding that's uniquely theirs.  The Malkis are showing you how to do it: plumb your own interests, skills, and personal style for ideas to enhance your wedding day.  You don't have to rappel into your ceremony from helicopters--you can keep the ceremony quite traditional and low-key, if you wish--but you can also create keepsakes like these and cook up a celebration sure to make an permanent impression.

Whether you like sports, dog shows, MMOs like WoW, nature, art, trains, wine, movies, chocolate, history--anything at all--you have plenty of material to customize your nuptials into an experience your guests will never forget.  Are you proficient with engineering, quilting, canning, cartooning, woodwork, painting with your iPhone, other whimsy?  Sit down with your partner and brainstorm something wonderful you can remember for a lifetime.  After all, that's what marriage is about, right?

[As bridal Mazerati burns rubber away from this column, hard-driving electric guitar riff plays to fade....]

Until next time, a sweet and long life to you (and thanks, David! and Nikki!)
