This is the continuing review of Mitakuye Oyasin by Dr. A.C. Ross..jpg)
As would be natural, once you begin the study of myths as they are related to the stars and planets, the next step is looking at Astrology. I actually had a difficult time getting through this section, as he discusses his own learning process and education of the art and science of Astrology. Not because I don't understand or believe in the power of Astrology-because I do. I had to search to find the charts a family friend who is a hobbyist Astrologer created for myself, Doug and one of us together. Which has lead me to the idea of writing an article about my own chart and how it follows true throughout my life experience as Michelle Cole.
Once again, I was faced with the fact that I was born into a sign that naturally pulls me toward the Spiritual/Mystical side of life. During the talk of Atlantis and Astrology, Edgar Cayce is mentioned quite frequently. I have never read any of his works, but will be soon enough! Cayce says, according to Dr. Ross, that there are 3 specific birth signs that all share this characteristic: attraction to Spirituality. This natural draw to the Spiritual will be an important factor in your life, and possibly a driving force behind many of your actions and/or choices if you are born under one of these three signs: Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Me? I'm Scorpio and a very typical one at that!
The more Dr. Ross learned about Astrology, the more amazed he became. There were far too many synchronicities to be 'mere coincidence'. He had charts created for 4 men who he knew to be deeply spiritual beings. These 4 men were: Dawson No Horses (the Holy Man the writing of this book is dedicated to, who had such an impact on many aspects of Dr. Ross' life), Fools Crow, King David and Jesus.
He found that all 4 charts had stars and planets aligned in such a manner as to foretell of lives driven by Spiritual focus. What I love about Dr. Ross writing of what he learned from Astrology, is that he puts the information into an easy to understand format. Which is why I kept referring to my own charts, while reading through the section he concentrates on Astrology! It can be truly inspirational to see the stars reflect what you know in your heart to be true about your life; there's a certain amount of peace that comes with accepting there are going to be certain things that come naturally and easy to you, and that there are aspects of life which you were born into with challenges. I found these comments about Jesus' chart to be interesting:
"The chart had to have in it the 7 B.C. Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, with the Sun, which is thought to have been what the Magi (wise men) followed. The birth time, arrived at in this way fit marvelously for March 1, 7 B.C., Julian Calendar. The psychic readings of Edgar Cayce also stated that Jesus was born in March. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes that Jesus was born in the Spring. Sid Hurlburt commented, in a USA Today article, that the early Christians did not really know when Jesus was born but decided to mark the date as December 25th, to coincide with the Winter Solstice, in the hope of converting the traditional peoples who held their ceremonies at this time of year."
Pagans have followed the seasons of the Earth, much as many other Native and Aboriginal Cultures have for centuries and continue to do presently. I was actually surprised (extremely excited as well!) to read that the Sioux celebrate Spiritual events that also follow the Solstices and Equinoxes; much as the old, traditional Goddess Religions. I found it wonderful to sense Dr. Ross' genuine encouragement for all races of people to search for their own Culturally relevant Spiritual practices. As more and more people become dis-satisfied with the 'black and white' rules of traditional Religions, the lack of openness in asking questions without being held to an idea that you should simply accept what is told to you as truth; more people begin a search for a deeper, more personal connection to Spirituality. The idea that what is right for me is right for you is simply too restrictive to allow the freedom of personal Spiritual development.
I have been one of those that early in my search for my own Spiritual awakening, found comfort and familiarity in the ways of traditional Sioux Spirituality. I yearn for that connection to Mother Earth, to connect to the slumbering death that is Winter, in preparation for the awakening Re-Birth in Spring. A friend once told me I was a natural Witch when I told her laughingly, I am an oddball, because I do my "spring cleaning" in fall. She told me that I was simply preparing for my 'hibernation' period, cleaning my den. I follow my natural instincts, which tend to follow the seasons; most of the time without even being aware! The one thing all people can agree on is that all things physical in nature are born of the Earth and to the Earth they will all return. Another common thread of 'belief' is that we all have Souls, or Spirits, that live on past the bodies' physical return to Earth.
As a person raised without any direct influence from any one religion, I am happy and feel fortunate to have had the freedom to find spiritual teachings that resonate through my body, mind and soul as 'true' or 'right'. I find myself attracted to certain spiritual practices more than others, especially those that encourage personal growth through the idea there is no 'wrong' way to celebrate your Spirituality (as long as it harms none). While I have yet to find one particular sect of Spirituality that fits me completely-I certainly can see where many of the pieces have come from during my Spiritual Development. While there may always be a part of me that wishes I had been born into a Tribal Nation where I could be taught spirituality and specific & traditional ways of celebrating it, or perhaps born as a Hereditary Witch with a Mother and Grandmother to teach me how to carry on the practice of Ritual Magik-I find joy and a certain amount of peace knowing that I have the freedom to create my very own personalized brand of Spirituality.
The last area of the book I'd like to share with you deals with the idea of a 'new age' coming to the planet and human kind. If you tend to bury your head in the sand and deny the fact we're in a serious situation here-I suggest you start researching for yourself the wide variety of archaeological finds and the information that exists about our ancestors. Some of what Dr. Ross found in his own study and research were the discoveries of petroglyph's that display some very interesting subject material. Some of these are gauged at being at least 50,000 years old and show things such as: a man using a telescope and scanning the Heavens, three individuals in feathered headdresses performing a heart transplant and depictions of 'flying machines'. Dr. Ross mentions that he himself recalled from his early education that he was told humans did not study the stars and the heavens until Galileo. If you think DiVinci was ahead of his time with the ideas and sketches he drew of various flying vehicles, think about the fact that items have been found at sites depicting flying machines that are thousands of years old. Perhaps it takes a vivid imagination, which I have, to even imagine a time when humans had developed far beyond our scope of understanding by todays' standards; even harder to wrap your mind around the fact that many believe Atlantis was one such embodiment of that scientific and spiritual evolution and lost due to poor and/or mis-management of our environment.
Dr. Ross also mentions a possible 'polar shift' that has been expected to come near the turn of the 21st century. I find this a fascinating subject, as it's also a prominent one that Dick Sutphen discusses frequently. The closer we are getting to the year 2012, the more buzz there is about what this coming 'shift' could mean. There are those who follow the theory that because it coincides with the ending of the Mayan calendar it will mean the end of the world as we know it: catastrophic floods, severe and dangerous weather patterns and seismic activity that will change the face of our planet and our world. Climate change is to some just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come. On a brighter note, as more people face the fact that whether or not humans caused it isn't the issue here, there is a growing awareness that we do impact our environment and we need to take better care of our air, water and soil if we hope to continue living on this planet. I'm not one of those "Save Mother Earth" people, I know Mother Earth will recover just fine if we can't find a way to occupy her in harmony. I simply think it would be a shame if the Human Race can't figure out how to put aside petty differences and stop killing each other and destroying our water, air and soil.
The other factor here, is that a growing number of people see this 'shift' as more a change in our human perspective. Perhaps the 'New Age' is nothing other than a return to our Intuition, our Instincts and a mentally, emotionally driven desire to re-connect with the energy that surrounds us in all living things. To return to a simpler way of life, one that respects and honors the natural order of life, death and re-birth. One thing that seems to be happening, and I've experienced myself in the last year or so, is a curious 'coming together' of like-minded people. Since my early 20's I've been fortunate to have been friends with some amazing women who helped me find and expand my Spiritual path. However, in the past year I have found at least 5 women who share a similar view of Spirituality, and since I started writing here I have found more.
I suppose, in the end, whether or not you believe in Atlantis, Mu, Astrology or a coming 'shift' the important thing to remember is that we all come from the same source. We are all beings of light, love, spirit and energy. My favorite general aspect of Dr. Ross' first published book would have to be his honest desire to create in others a spark of Spiritual Awakening. He repeatedly states that you are not expected to believe what he believes, to see the world as he sees it. What he sees, what he feels, what he's experienced in his life has brought him peace and a meaningful life-something I'm beginning to feel about my own life processes. If you find just one thing to take away from reading about his experiences and research into his own Spiritual and Cultural history, I think he would be happy with that. Mostly, I think that he has done such a wonderful job of searching for similarities between different belief systems, to show how we are related. To get past negative feelings, to get past the things that separate us, we must search for what we hold in common. In the search to connect with others, we must always start within ourselves and open our minds, hearts and souls to see what lays beyond that which we've always accepted.
For me personally, it is difficult to imagine reading Mitakuye Oyasin and not realize how we truly are all related.
