I just came back from a Death Cab For Cutie concert at the Greek Theatre on the U.C. Berkeley campus. Andrew Bird (Happy Birthday!!!) was the opening act. I've listened to Noble Beast, but I didn't realize how talented Bird really is until seeing him in concert. He went back and forth between playing the violin, guitar, and keyboard for the whole set. Ben Gibbard even made a comment about it, it's true. As expected, Death Cab For Cutie delievered again. It was interesting to catch little details that are not
as apparent on the albums themselves. For example, during the instrumetnal part on "I Will Possess Your Heart" from Narrow Stairs, there's a part where the guitar stops and the keyboard comes in. At that part, Gibbard simply dropped his guitar and went to the keyboard. It was rather abrupt but works for the song. On the acoustic ballad "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" from Plans, Gibbard was left alone on the stage to sing "If heaven and hell decide that they are both are satisfied . . ." People in the audience lifted their lighters or cell phones, and was a rather moving moment. Death Cab For Cutie has also released an EP titled The Open Door as they played a song from it at the concert. They are one of the heavy-hitters on the alternative music scene, and rightly so with a great performance at the Greek Theatre.
