I recently saw the Sam Mendes' film Away We Go, and I immediately knew I had to get the soundtrack because it is simply amazing. The soundtrack has 13 tracks: 9 are Alexi Murdoch songs, 1 from Bob Dylan, Geogre Harrison, The Stranglers, and The Velvet Underground. This is good, a nice mixture of old and new. Murdoch clearly dominates the soundtrack, I remember his music the most after leaving the theater. He is an amazing talent, often referred to as a contemporary Nick Drake, especially with
"Orange Sky." Most of the songs come from his 2006 album Time Without Consequence, but in case you didn't hear about it, go see Away We Go and you'll get a pretty good sense of it. If you do, you will discover like many people have already what an amazing singer/songwriter Murdoch is as he definitely has a bright musical future. That being said, I really admire the soundtrack for also acknowledging what has come before Murdoch. In order to appreciate indie music in the 21st century, one has to have an understanding of the influencial bands / musicians from the past. Can you get anymore influencial than Bob Dylan? Or The Velvet Underground? They are well-deserved icons, and their rippling effect can still be felt today.
