I would rather fill the heavy, lead crystal bowl sitting in my bookcase with fragrant, dewy, white Camellias but I can't find Camellias in New York City this time of year. Finding tiny white tea lights on the shelves of the 99 cent stores nestled between the dusty, little mini-marts called bodegas and dreary laundry mats operating without the benefit of ancient cleaning secrets that line the streets of the boroughs. New York City makes it easy to find tiny white tea lights and bargain entertainment.
The Bowery Poetry Club and the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe are akin to hunting for Camellia's in NYC. These are the two of the best kept city secrets amongst NYC entertainment connoisseurs.
1. The Nuyorican Poet's Cafe:
New York City is the ultimate melting pot and it's entertainment venues are equally vast and eclectic. One of the lower east side's cultural icons is the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. The Nuyorican brings together performers from every culture possible. These artists perform slam poetry, hip hop, literature, visual arts and theater with cutting edge excellence. The first Wednesday of every month a unique "open mic" night brings together emcees, poets and musicians influenced from every corner of the world. This open jam session begins at 9:30pm and is only $12.
2. The Bowery Poetry Club:
The Bowery Poetry Club is the center of all things hip in NYC entertainment. Poetry slams, stand-up comedy, music, literature readings and more. Mondays are Bingo Nite with Murray Hill and Linda Simpson! The game show has been a staple at the Bowery and so have its spicy hosts, drag queen Linda Simpson and the very funny Mr. Murray Hill. Bingo spokesmodels like DIRTY MARTINI, WORLD FAMOUS *BOB*, THE DAZZLE DANCERS, and others, keep the fun going. You can find the weekly line-up on the Monday Night Bingo myspace page. .jpg)
Prizes range from the ridiculous, like a remote controlled fart machine and porcelain dancing baby, to superb, including theatre tickets, booze, porn (VHS format), various speciality items and a cash prize. Bingo players are allowed to eat and drink while playing. The event is free and bingo cards are only two dollars each.
The event is sponsored by Magic Hat and draft beers are only $4. Happy hour is from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Every Tuesday the Bowery is home to the Urbana Poetry Slam. Huge names in the poetry world have performed in the slam, Billy Collins, Patricia Smith, Galway Kinnell, Saul Williams as well as National Slam Champions. In 2002 the Urbana won the National Poetry Slam Championship.
There is a featured poet that gives a talk on the craft of poetry at 6:30 p.m. The Urbana begins at 7:00 p.m. and only costs $7.
