
Below are just a few of the many book-and-reading related happenings taking place in our area this month, including journalist Tina Brown's talk about Princess Diana (10/13) and Eoin Colfer's signing of the approved follow-up to Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (10/19). Sunday, 10/4/09
Booksigning for Swarthmore Borough, a new release in the nationwide regional history series "Images of America" by Arcadia Publishing (check Arcadia's website to see of they have done a book on your home town). This event takes place Sunday, October 4 from 2 to 4 PM in the McCabe Library on the Swarthmore College campus. The booksigning is in conjunction with the exhibit, "Swarthmore: Town and Gown," currently on display at the McCabe Library, through October 8.
Watch for another signing of this book by authors and Swarthmore residents Susanna Morikawa & Patricia O’Donnell on Monday, October 19 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 141 Park Ave., Swarthmore.

Remembering the Remarkable Frank McCourt: An Evening of Reminiscence, Music, Poetry, and Laughter (Symphony Space, New York City). I know: This event takes place in NYC, and is mostly for friends, family and high-level literati. However, FYI, some tickets for the general public will be distributed at the Symphony Space box office of between 3 and 5 PM Tuesday, before the event starts at 5 PM. More importantly, though, for those of us, like myself, who are great fans of Frank, McCourt but can't travel that day: the event will be streamed at symphonyspace.org. More info.

Douglas Hofstadter, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the brilliant Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, will be lecturing on the intriguing subject of “The Deep Interconnectedness of Human Souls.” More info.

Kay Redfield Jamison, professor of psychiatry and author of the bestselling memoir of manic depression, An Unquiet Mind, talks about her latest book, Nothing Was the Same, a meditation on loss and grief. More info.

Tina Brown talk on "Diana and the Aristocracy of Celebrity." Journalist and Daily Beast editor-in-chief Tina Brown, author of The Diana Chronicles, comes to Philadelphia to talk about the Princess of Wales' influence on the cult of celebrity and what Brown calls "the aristocracy of exposure." This event takes place at the National Constitution Center in conjunction with the "Diana: A Celebration" exhibit which opened October 3 and runs through December 31, 2009. Tickets and reservations are required. A book signing with books provided by the Joseph Fox Bookshop will follow the lecture. More info.

Steve Poses. If you loved Frög and The Commissary restaurants, you won’t want to miss this lecture by the founding chef himself, who now runs Frog Commissary Catering. Philadelphia Stories’ PUSH TO PUBLISH Workshop at Rosemont College. Are you a writer? Here's your chance to meet editors and agents, learn how to tap into the creative nonfiction craze, market your short story, polish your poetry, and more. Lise Funderburg, author of the memoir Pig Candy: Taking My Father South, Taking My Father Home, is the keynote speaker at this one-day, all-day event (9 AM - 5 PM). Many local published authors such as Gregory Frost, Kelly Simmons, Karen E. Quinones Miller, Marc Schuster and more will be sitting on panels and available to answer questions in their area of expertise. Full disclosure: your Philadelphia Literary Scene Examiner, Kathye Petrie, author of the children's picture book, Flying Jack, will be one of the writers on the "Writing for Children and Young Adults" panel. Eoin Colfer, author of the internationally best-selling Artemis Fowl children’s series, has written a much anticipated, sanctioned-by-the-family-of-Douglas Adams' follow-up to the comic space odyssey, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He’ll give a talk and sign copies of the book, And Another Thing ..., at the Free Library of Philadelphia, starting at 7:30 PM. More info.

Jerry & Eileen Spinelli. Married (and local!) award-winning children’s book authors Jerry Spinelli and Eileen Spinelli have published their first title together. Called Today I Will: A Year of Notes, Quotes and Promises to Myself, the book features daily entries featuring quotes from children’s books combined with wisdom and advice from the Spinellis. The book, like the authors themselves, is full of heart and love and, while aimed at children, works for all ages. (Full disclosure: The Spinellis are colleagues/friends and a quote from my children's picture book, Flying Jack, is included in the book — and I am exceedingly thrilled and honored.) More info.
