Published and aspiring-to-be-published Philadelphia-area writers can polish and update their manuscript submission skills at the 2009 Philadelphia Stories "Push to Publish" workshop taking place this Saturday, 10/17, at Rosemont College.

Subtitled "Strategies and Techniques to Get Your Work in Print and Online," this all-day (9 AM - 5 PM) event covers such topics as "Tapping into the Creative Non-fiction Craze," "Finding a Home for your Short Story," "Poetry Chapbook How-tos," "Writing Fiction for Children & Young Adults" and "Promoting Your Work in a Web 2.0 World." Panels of  published authors headed by a moderator will discuss each topic and answer questions from attendees. Read complete info on all panels.

 

Panelists and moderators include authors Gregory Frost, Kelly Simmons, Karen E. Quinones Miller, Marc Schuster, Kathye Fetsko Petrie (your Philadelphia Literary Scene Examiner will be talking about children's books along with Julia Chang, Carmen Ferreiro-Esteba, Catherine Stine and Nancy Viau ), Aimee LaBrie, Tree Reisener, and more. Social media guru Don Lafferty will be leading the panel on successful online marketing strategies for authors. Read full list of poets and authors.

An rare and valuable feature of the day is the "Speed Date with the Editors" sessions which provide attendees the opportunity to meet one-on-one for 10-minutes with editors and agents who will review a specific work (read guidelines here). Publications with editors on-hand include Creative Nonfiction, Don Ron Books, First City Review, Oshun Publishing Company, Painted Bride Quarterly, SmokeLong Quarterly, and Wild River Review. A representative from the submission service Writer's Relief, Inc., will also be reviewing manuscripts, as will Adam Schear, an agent with DeFiore and Company. See full list of participants

A highlight will be the keynote speech at 10 AM by Lise Funderburg, a regular contributor to O, The Oprah Magazine and the author of the acclaimed memoir Pig Candy: Taking My Father South,Taking My Father Home. Read all of Lise Funderburg's publication credits.

The regular cost of the 2009 Push to Publish workshop is $75. Students and seniors may attend for $65. Cost to Rosemont College students is $37.50.  Online registration is available.
