I have to say seeing Obama reach out to Iran with the teleprompter is one of the worst and most arrogant things I have seen him do yet. It looks to me like Obama figured he would give one of his patented teleprompter speeches and that Iran would just turn over like the American public and go “okay lets vote for change”.
It’s not just that Iran isn’t dumb enough to fall for this approach, they don’t see any substance in it. Iran’s leaders say ok when you change we’ll change. Unfortunately I think Obama may actually give them the change they want but it will never be enough unless we completely abandon everything that the United States is about.
It’s like the proverbial frog and scorpion. A scorpion asks a frog to help it cross the water because he can’t swim. The frog agrees because if the scorpion were to sing him they would both die. Then the scorpion stings the frog anyway and says its because it’s his nature. In this case the scorpion (Iran) doesn’t even want to get to the other side but the frog (Obama) is offering to take the scorpion across if the scorpion just will agree to not be hostile in the future. There is nothing in this for Iran and they can hold out because they know the US and the West will continue to give in eventually. Even now there is mention of easing the sanctions against Iran despite them not working as it is because they’re not strong enough or enforced completely. Even if we could get Iran to cooperate now, what’s to keep them from attacking us later?
Let’s not forget the past of Iran 30 years ago. This isn’t some distant memory, it is to Iran it’s celebrated present. The events of 1979 and the take over and kidnapping of the US embassy are a basis for the present situation, not something Iran is ashamed of and wants to change. Americans may want hope and change but Iran figures they got theirs 30 years ago and their leaders are quite happy with what they got. Some of the Iranian people may not like their leaders, so if anything we need to be supportive of them but we also need to not be naïve. Obama or not America unfortunately has a history of backing countries for our short term interests rather than our long term goals.
