The Minneapolis bicycling culture is alive and undeniably infectious. Minneapolis' bike-friendly infrastructure, like its commuter lanes, recreational biking trails, and year-round trail maintenance, make the Twin Cities a great place for two-wheel transportation and recreation.
This month's Travel and Leisure Magazine rated Minneapolis in the top ten biking cities across the globe. Only two other U.S. cities were cited: Seattle and Portland. Sorry, Portland, an article in the April edition of Good Magazine boasted that nearly 4% of Minneapolis commuters travel by bike, and on many days it definitely feels like more.
Despite average annual snowfall of around 55 inches, hundreds of miles of biking trails, year-round biking, an enormous Critical Mass, and pick-up games of Bike Polo help create a culture of avid, die-hard bikers.
Not only are there a ton of people riding bikes in this city, but the Twin Cities local art culture is pleased to present many arts events in honor of the Bicycle. ArtCrank, a bike poster art show, is held in Minneapolis and Denver in the spring, but here are some other events coming up this month.
501 Club hosts BFF, the Bicycle Film Festival, starting this Wednesday, July 8th with bicycle trivia and the festival's opening party. The bike films start on Thursday at 7pm at the Riverview Theatre with The Triplets of Belleville. Other movies and shorts continue through the weekend at the Cedar Cultural Center.
Make sure you get your Bike Polo team ready. For $15 per team, get together for one of the roughest sports on two wheels. Check it out at McRae Park in South Minneapolis at 46th St and Chicago Ave. Team registration starts at 11:30am and games begin at 12:30pm. Check out http://bicyclefilmfestival.com/ for a full line-up and locations of films and events going on this weekend.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts hosts an interactive evening of events on the third Thursday of every month. July's event, Tour de Force, is another celebration of the bicycle.
From 6-9pm on July 16th, enjoy free bike valet, make your own "vintage" bike poster, check out Ruby3's bike-friendly fashions by local designer Anna Lee, watch a classic Italian bicycle film The Bicycle Thief, and catch some great music by local band Kid Dakota. There will be drawings for prizes from Surly bikes, Nut Case helmets, and Twin Six gear.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is located at 2400 3rd Avenue S, Minneapolis, MN - Admission is Free (Donation recommended).
