Fresh Eire: Friel celebrated in Stanford theater fest

July 8, 3:05 PM
by Chad Jones, S.F. Theater Examiner

The life and work of Irish playwright Brian Friel
is being celebrated in this year's Stanford Summer
Theatre Festival, which includes plays, films and
a symposium.
For its 10th anniversary year, the Stanford Summer Theater Festival is looking east -- to Ireland. The subject of this year's tribute is a playwright who is probably not as well known in this country as he should be. Brian Friel, whose most popular play is "Dancing at Lughnasa," will be feted with plays, films and a symposium delving into his importance.

The 10-week festival gets under way Thursday, July 10, with the first of two Friel productions. "Translations," about the tensions that arise when the British army begins to map the Irish countryside and can't speak Gaelic, runs July 10 through 27 in the Pigott Theater in the Memorial Auditoriumon the Stanford campus.

The second production of the summer is Friel's "Faith Healer," which runs July 31 through Aug. 17, also in the Pigott Theater. The play, which was revived on Broadway in 2006 starring Ralph Fiennes, is the story of series of Frank Hardy, the title character, as seen from the perspective of four different characters (living and dead).

Tickets are $15-$20. E-mail sst@stanford.edu for information.

Also part of the festival is a film series on Monday nights through Aug. 18. The films include "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Odd Man Out," "The Crying Game," "In the Name of the Father" and "The Commitments." The movies are free and begin at 7 p.m. in Cubberley Auditorium, Lasuen Mall, on the Stanford campus.

What would a collegiate festival be without a symposium? Irish actress and keynote speaker Ingrid Craigie will be part of a group addressing "Brian Friel in Context." Joining her will be Andrew Robinson, Geoff Hoyle, Courtney Walsh Phleger, Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, Rush Rehm, Charles Junkerman and Amy Freed. Register at http://continuingstudies.stanford.edu.

Friel, who turns 80 next January and celebrates his 50th year as a published playwright, served on the Irish Seante between 1987 and 1989. Today he livs in a small village in the north of County Donegal.
