Some people think Sam Harris is a boorish, militant, arrogant New Atheist.
Some people think Bill Maher is an obnoxious, offensive, smarmy Hollywood heathen.
In order to completely blow the minds of those people, Sam Harris (finally) appeared as a guest on last week's Real Time with Bill Maher.
But much to their disappointment, I suspect, the two engage in a cool, humorous, relaxed discussion about the nature of atheism, the manifestations of religious belief in public policy, and the science-faith divide. It's quite informative and clear for such a brief conversation, and--to those unfamiliar with the two figures--a good example of how non-militant these men are. (As my wife pointed out, the most impolitic thing that either of them says is Harris's reference to some religious beliefs as "bullshit.")
This is the first time I've seen Harris emerge publicly since formally launching his group the Reason Project, and I hope we see more of him, as I think he makes an excellent television representative for nonbelievers. Anyway, the interview is below. Enjoy.
