Smashing Pumpkins have announced an August 9 gig. Before you Pumpkins fanatics get too excited, know that the show will not happen in Chicago.
Since the Pumpkins reformed in 2006 they have not played a gig in their home city. Once again, Billy Corgan and crew are avoiding a Chicago show, and instead are playing a casino (Harrah's Horseshoe Casino, to be exact) in Hammond, IN.
According to news on the band's official site, they seem to be holding off on a gig in their home city so they can schedule it around their 20th anniversary in November.
It remains to be seen exactly when and where the anniversary show will take place, but the site promises that it will be "magical" and that the band is "working on lots of surprises."
Local fans have been waiting for a home town show since 2006, so November doesn't seem like too much longer to wait. Even so, I'd imagine many are feeling a bit cheated by now. I remember when the buzz surrounding Lollapalooza 2006 was that the Pumpkins were going to appear unannounced, and the festival came and went with no Smashing Pumpkins in sight. It wasn't hard to see that people were genuinely disappointed. If you're of this ilk, feel free to voice your frustration below. Or, if you prefer to look on the bright side, feel free to muse about the news of an anniversary show late in the year.
Tickets to the Hammond show go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday through Ticketmaster.
