Grandgigglers, Cam and Jack, 5 years old.
(E. Jacob)

For every action, there’s a reaction. For example, have you ever noticed how infectious a smile can be? Whenever you see someone else smile, you smile. The impact of the original smile creates a similar, almost mimicked response. Frequently, this physiological response is accompanied by a feeling of happiness.

Some people just radiate happiness – a combination of warmth, love, playfulness, satisfaction, energy – every time they smile. Can you imagine what a beautiful world this would be if you smiled at every person you saw, and then they smiled back at you and they smiled at the next person they saw, and they smiled back, and, like that old shampoo commercial, and so on and so on? Happiness is one of the most important feelings and it’s so easy to share – just through a simple smile.

Spending time with and listening to my grandchildren always makes me smile. They say and do the cutest, cleverest, smartest, sweetest things! (Okay, so I’m a pushover. I admit it.) In honor of my twin grandsons’ fifth birthday, this month’s Grand-giggles are all from and about Cameron and Jackson. I hope they make you smile.

1. Having picked the boys up from pre-school, we were driving home, and out of the backseat I heard a a little voice, “Grammy, why do you have drippy arms? Are they wet?” (I was wearing a sleeveless shirt and suddenly realized I'd made an unfortunate choice, as my “batwings” were exposed in all their “glory”.) No doubt he meant “droopy”. Trying to hide the stab to my ego, I answered, “No, they aren’t wet. Why?” He said, “Well, they’re just hanging there, drippy and flowy.” Ouch!

2. When presented with a plate filled with blueberries, grapes, strawberries, and carrots, Cam said, “Oh, Grammy! That’s a plethora of snacks!”

3. Cam and Jack just turned 5 and observing their interaction has become a fascination for me. Their 2-year old sister had just received a play kitchen set for her birthday, complete with accessories and fake food. Jack tired of the toy quickly, but Cameron was determined to cook me dinner. Having taken my order, he set about mixing and “cooking”. He served it to me beautifully, “Here, Grammy. Scrambled eggs, just the way you like them. Now eat them up.” Lucky me! As I pretended to devour this scrumptious faux concoction, I asked Cam, “Aren’t you going to eat? It’s so delicious!” His reply: “Oh, no. I tasted and tasted while I cooked all day, and now I’m not hungry!”

4. During a rather long and tedious car ride, the conversation turned to bats. Jack asked question after question and finally, when he asked why bats live in caves, I answered, “Oh. I dunno.” Cam piped up, “Oh, I know! That’s because they’re nocturnal. They can only see when it’s dark.” Almost stunned by this bat-maven, I replied, “Cameron, you’re so smart!” After a brief pause, he answered, “Mommy says you’re smart, Grammy. But I’m smarter – obviously!” Can’t argue with that!

5. Jack wanted to play with me and I asked him to be patient while I put a pony tail in his sister’s hair. He watched, fascinated, then asked, “Grammy, why are you putting a pony tail on Skylar? She’s not a horse!” Words escaped me.

Smile -- and pass it on!
