G Street Fabrics, perhaps one of DC’s most famous fabric landmarks is no longer in the Mid-Pike Plaza in Rockville. It has been replaced with a Halloween costume shop that I presume is being revamped as we speak into a Christmas store (just a hunch though).
Why has our superior-quality, slightly over-priced (but completely worth it) fabric megastore been removed from said strip mall? Because it moved into what appears to be an even bigger and grander (although much less visible) location -- 5520 Randolph Road, North Bethesda. It is in the same shopping center as the Gold’s Gym that faces the train tracks. The one with that Chinese buffet that every man I know likes and every one of their wives thinks is nasty (called the Fortune Star Café, and no, I’m not a food critic now, so don’t get mad).
For those who don’t know, G Street Fabrics is a huge, upscale fabric store with everything from cotton to dressmaking and upholstery fabrics. According to their website, G Street Fabrics was opened in 1941 in Washington, DC on, you guessed it, G Street, and became a “local landmark.” "Diplomats and dignitaries [would] seek couture fabrics to replicate garments seen in Paris and New York” and local workers would shop for outer-wear fabrics for their urban jobs. They have quilts and gowns created by local artists on display throughout the store and they run an extensive array of classes (none of which I have taken, all of which look fabulous). Anyways, if you haven’t been there go, and if you do go there, go check out their new location.
And as always… Happy stitching!
