Basically, all planners agree that a married woman should have at least one credit card in her own name, and her name only. So you have your one token card. But how is your credit doing these days? Has your credit been influenced by your partner (up or down)? The best way to find out how you are doing in the credit world is to get your credit report.
Under federal law, you are entitled to a free credit report (also called a credit file disclosure) every year. There are literally dozens of sites that offer a "free credit report" - but beware. You can waste time and money trying to navigate through these sites looking for your "free" report. For a truly free credit report without any gimmicks, membership fees or upsells, visit annualcreditreport.com and either fill in the secure online form, print it out and mail it in, or call their toll-free number. This site is the only credit report site that is authorized by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). How secure is the site? Very! Security precautions include CAPTCHA technology, secure https and Verisign® certification.
NOTE: A free credit report from annualcreditreport.com does not include your credit score. You will need to pay one of the credit card services, either Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion, for your credit score.I say: check your credit once a year. For free, of course.
