Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated was on the Dan Patrick radio program this morning and sounded like he'd just come from a dying man's bedside.
He is of the belief that Dodgers owner Frank McCourt might put something in front of Scott Boras, Manny Ramirez's agent, that is less than the previous offer from the team.
In Heyman's opinion, the Ramirez team has shown its readiness to compromise but a lower offer might just be the last straw. Compromise is a word that isn't used very often to describe the Boras method of business.
As Heyman noted, the San Francisco Giants have not left the picture and seem to be hovering like a helicopter over the proceedings.
No one thinks the Giants are in the $25 million range for a one year deal but since these business negotiations are playing out like a bad high school dating relationship, it isn't out of the realm of possibility that Boras could have Manny sign for less just to stick it to the Dodgers.
That is hard for me to believe since it's all about the Benjamins for Boras. It's what he has been known for and he's been successful at it.
Stay tuned as the day unfolds in Manny -land. Keep tabs on the Giants with Theo Fightmaster, our Examiner for that team and Jim Lakely, the Dodgers Examiner.
