Eric H.Holder Jr., a partner in the Washington law firm Covington & Burling, is reported to have received an offer from President-elect Barack Obama to become the next Attorney General of the United States.
Holder has worked in the Justice Department on a previous occasion. He was appointed by former President Bill Clinton to a post as Deputy Attorney General.
His connection to sports is recent and material. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hired Holder to oversee the league's independent investigation of Michael Vick. In July 2007, Holder was asked to structure and be responsible for the activities of investigators who worked in parallel fashion to the federal criminal authorities that were negotiating with Vick's attorneys.
On the recommendation of Holder the league refused to allow Vick to attend the Falcons 2007 training camp after his indictment on federal charges. He was ultimately suspended indefinitely after Holder's investigation was complete and his final report was delivered to the league.
