By now you may have heard that Memory Makers, like Simple Scrapbooks and MemoryTrends, is folding. The company announced the decision on its website, saying that the magazine will stop publishing after the September/October 2009 issue. The Memory Makers Masters competition has also been canceled.
According to the official announcement on the MM forums, Memory Makers will continue to keep its website presence and will publish scrapbooking books even after it stops producing the magazine. The company will also continue to host the Great American Scrapbook Conventions.
Nancy Nally of Scrapbook Update wrote an article back on April 6 speculating that Memory Makers might be in danger of closing, and broke the news of its closure a day before it was announced on the Memory Makers website.
Reaction to the news has been a combination of grief and lack of surprise. Becky Fleck, the author of the Page Maps column, said on Scrapbook Update that she was "saddened" by the decision. MM forum members say they are "disappointed," "hate to see it go," and "not surprised." Posts on the message board at Two Peas in a Bucket express concern about renewing other magazines in light of the announcement and predict that most publications will be web-based in the future.
