This is my first article in quite a while and I know that yes it has nothing to do with gadgets really but bear with me. This is important to anyone in the pop-culture world.
The 2009 Lollapalooza lineup has been officially announced on their website today and I have to say that I'm disappointed. I've been going to the festival for 4 or 5 years and it's been great EVERY year without fail but this year I'm very let down. I like to think I have a very open and unlimited taste in music and part of Lollapalooza to me has always been going to hear about new groups that I haven't listened to before. There's one problem this year: I've listened to every band on the lineup. Reality is, none of them are THAT good. Not only that but I'd say over 75% of those groups I've seen in a live setting before.
For those of you clueless as to what this post is about, Lollapalooza is one of the largest and most important music festivals held each year in Chicago, IL. during the first weekend in August. It's a three day festival and there are always three or four huge artists playing and a good two hundred smaller ones milling around. Unfortunately this year the headliners are Tool and Depeche Mode, two bands that are way out of their prime. That being said even the supporting acts aren't so hot. Most angering being the likes of Ida Maria, Asher Roth, Coheed and Cambria, the Ra Ra Riot, and The Virgins. It takes good supporting acts to fill out a good bill and not only is the bill extremely heavy being laden with poor major acts, but the supporting acts can't hold any weight at all.
I will say though that I am happy to see Kings of Leon, Snoop Dogg, The Beastie Boys, TV on the Radio, Fleet Foxes, Portugal. The Man, MSTRKRFT, Kid CuDi, Kevin Devine, and Bassnectar. I'm ESPECIALLY happy out of all of those to see Kevin Devine as I haven't heard anything from that gentlemen in quite a few years but it's refreshing to know that he is still making music. Although yet again angering, why isn't MSTRKRFT playing a real show and not just spinning on Perry's stage? Frustrating...
Anyway, I have yet to decide whether I'm going to drop the chunk of change this year. Two years ago it was justifiable if for nothing else Daft Punk. Last year for Wilco and Radiohead. This year? I have yet to decide.
