Sloppy defense, bad offense costs Sox in 5-0 loss
And, like that, we're back to the bad Sox.
After a convincing 6-1 win over the Dodgers last night, the White Sox looked flat in their 5-0 loss to Los Angeles tonight, only collecting four hits while making three errors.
The tone of the game was set in the bottom of the first inning when Juan Pierre led the game off for the Dodgers with a single to left. He attempted to steal second on Gavin Floyd's first pitch, but AJ Pierzynski's throw went wide to the right of shortstop Orlando Cabrera, deflecting off his glove and into center field to allow Pierre to reach third.
Floyd was quick to the plate on the pitch and Pierzynski had a good chance to get the speedy Pierre, but the throw was off line and Pierzynski was charged with his sixth error of the season.
Pierre was quickly brought home on a single by Andre Ethier to make it 1-0 Dodgers.
After Ethier's single, Jeff Kent hit a deep fly ball to right that appeared to be catchable. However, Jermaine Dye missed the ball and it dropped in, allowing Ethier to cruise into third and Kent into second. Dye was charged with an error on the play.
Russell Martin then brought Ethier home to make it 2-0 in favor of Los Angeles.
Floyd was able to pitch out of that jam, however, retiring the next three Dodger hitters. After falling dormant for the second and third innings, the Dodgers struck for three in the fourth to put Los Angeles up 5-0.
That was more than enough run support for lefty Eric Stults, who pitched a magnificent game against a White Sox offense that generally struggles against soft-tossing left-handers, especially those who they haven't seen before.
Stults matched that description perfectly, and the 28-year-old threw a complete-game shutout in just his second start of the 2008 season.
Alexei Ramirez was the only Sox hitter who appeared to have a good read on Stults, going 2/3 on the game. Pierzynski and Dye picked up the other two hits for the White Sox.
Today was the eighth time the White Sox had failed to score a run in a game this year—a staggering total for a first-place team.
However, the White Sox may not be in first place for long.
With their loss and a Minnesota win—the Twins defeated the Padres 9-3 in San Diego—the White Sox sit just a half-game ahead of the Twins for first place in the AL Central. The Twins have now won eight straight games with their victory tonight.
John Danks (4-4) will go against highly-touted rookie Clayton Kershaw (0-1) tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match of this three-game series.
