Bats stay hot for Sox in 8-2 win over Pittsburgh
Maybe the Cubs should be worried about the White Sox after all.
The first installment of the annual "Crosstown Classic" series between the Cubs and White Sox begins on Friday at Wrigely Field, where the Cubs are a staggering 29-8 this year.
So why should the Cubs, who haven't lost at Wrigely Field since May 17, be worried about the White Sox?
The White Sox are a notoriously streaky team and have gone from scoring a torrid 61 runs in one week to just 14 in the following week.
However, right now, the White Sox appear to be on a hot streak—and the Cubs better take note.
The Sox's switch was flipped to "on" in
Tuesday's shellacking of Pittsburgh and showed no signs of turning off with Wednesday's 8-2 victory over the Pirates at U.S. Cellular Field.
Mark Buehrle was magnificent, going eight strong innings and allowing just two runs (both earned) on four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.
In typical "Buehrle" fashion, the pace of the game was fast, as the left-hander worked quickly to retire the first 15 batters he faced before surrendering a home run to designated hitter Jose Bautista. It took Buehrle just 96 pitches to get through his eight innings, and he threw 63 of those pitches for strikes.
The offense provided more than enough support for Buehrle, as the Sox blasted three home runs today en route to building a comfortable lead for Buehrle.
Toby Hall got the scoring started when he deposited a Tom Gorzelanny offering into the left field bullpen to put the White Sox up 2-0.
Carlos Quentin ended his nine-game homer-less drought with a solo shot, his 17th, in the fifth to put Chicago up 3-0. Brian Anderson followed with a solo home run of his own in the sixth to make it 4-1 White Sox.
The White Sox put some distance between themselves and the Pirates in the seventh when Jim Thome delivered a one-out bloop single to score Orlando Cabrera, making it 5-1 Sox. A two-out, two-run double by Nick Swisher plated Quentin and Thome to make it 7-1.
As a team, the Sox collected ten hits in the game, including two apiece from Cabrera and Quentin.
In their final tune-up before their three-game set with the Cubs kicks off, the Sox will send Gavin Floyd to the mound against the Pirates' Phil Dumatrait.
